December 23, 1998: The New Journal of Physics (NJP), jointly published by the Institute of Physics and the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft, is now live. The first published articles are available online at www.njp.org and a number of other articles are currently in various stages of peer review.
The NJP approach of a peer reviewed, all-electronic journal, accessible at no charge to readers, represents a different model from the traditional subscription based journal. It provides an opportunity to chart an innovative and responsible way forward for learned society publishers and provides authors with a showcase for their work.
Authors are not bound by the restrictions of a printed journal and now have the freedom to explore the possibilities offered by the internet. For example, authors have the ability to include complete original datasets associated with the graphs and figures in the article, allowing the interested reader to access the data for further analysis. "Movies" and other multi-media facilities can also be incorporated into the document to create a more interactive article.
Articles for publication in NJP or requests for information about the journal should be directed to Nicola Gulley at: email@example.com.
